Stainless steel bowl rusting

After the 2nd time in the dishwasher, I noticed that the spot welds on the bottom looked rusted. Is this normal. The surface feels smooth but the weld joints (I assume that is what the round rings are) are discolored the look black and red. Since then, I have been cleaning the stainless bowl by hand. Do I need to do anything to clean or protect the bowl?

These spots can appear black or red due to oxidation, but they do not affect the functionality or safety of the bowl. Cleaning the bowl by hand, as you’ve been doing, is an excellent practice to prevent this discoloration from worsening.

    To clean the discolored weld spots, you may use a mild dish soap and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Ensure the bowl is thoroughly dried after washing.

  • Is the discoloration just cosmetic or will I damage the stainless-steel bowl with repeated dishwasher cleaning?

  • You probably won't damage the bowl with dishwasher cleaning, but you will want to take the bowl out of the dishwasher fairly soon after the cycle is over so water does not stay pooled in the bottom of the bowl.  That is what ultimately causes the discoloration
